There is now a workbook in Classical composition technique available from ND Music Edition. Classical Technique in Composition is a text of exercises to be used in individual or classroom instruction. This is not a “Textbook”. These are exercises in the application of music theory that teach Classical techniques: Melody, Counterpoint, Harmony, Form, and Invention. This course gives beginning composers a more stable foundation from which to “jump into” their own style and leave them with more ability to achieve it.
These exercises assume a previous study and understanding of music theory. Two semesters of music theory, or a study of roman numeral analysis, 4-part voice leading, modulation, and form are needed to complete this workbook.
